Varuthini Ekadashi is a sacred fasting day dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is observed on the Ekadashi Tithi of Krishna Paksha during the Hindu month of Vaishakha. The word “Varuthini” means “protected” or “covered with divine armour.” According to Hindu beliefs, observing this vrat with sincerity protects devotees from negative energies, misfortune and sinful actions while bringing peace, prosperity and spiritual progress into their lives.
On this auspicious day, devotees worship Lord Vishnu, especially His Vamana avatar, observe a fast, chant Vishnu mantras and listen to the Varuthini Ekadashi Vrat Katha. The fast encourages control over the senses, purity of thoughts and freedom from unhealthy habits. It is believed that performing charity, serving the needy and remembering Lord Vishnu on Varuthini Ekadashi brings immense spiritual merit.
Har Ghar Pandit Ji advises devotees to observe the vrat according to their health and physical capacity. More than strict fasting, sincere devotion, truthful conduct, compassion and disciplined living are considered the true essence of Varuthini Ekadashi.
Varuthini Ekadashi is one of the most spiritually significant Ekadashis mentioned in Hindu scriptures. It is believed that Lord Krishna explained its importance to King Yudhishthira, describing the vrat as a powerful means of overcoming past mistakes and progressing towards a righteous and spiritually balanced life.
Devotees should begin their preparations from Dashami Tithi by consuming simple and sattvic food and avoiding grains, rice, onion, garlic, alcohol and other tamasic substances. On Ekadashi morning, one should bathe, wear clean clothes and take a sankalp to observe the fast with faith and discipline. Lord Vishnu should be worshipped with yellow flowers, Tulsi leaves, incense, a lamp, fruits and sattvic offerings.
Throughout the day, devotees may chant “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya”, recite the Vishnu Sahasranama, read the Bhagavad Gita and listen to the Varuthini Ekadashi Vrat Katha. Anger, dishonesty, criticism, violence and negative thinking should be avoided. Depending on personal health, the fast may be observed as Nirjala, with fruits and milk, or with permitted vrat food.
Charity holds special importance on Varuthini Ekadashi. Donating food, clothes, water, fruits or other essential items to deserving people is believed to increase the spiritual benefits of the vrat. The fast is concluded on Dwadashi Tithi during the prescribed Parana time after offering prayers to Lord Vishnu and providing food or assistance to someone in need.
Spiritually, Varuthini Ekadashi teaches that genuine protection does not come only from material possessions—it arises from faith, righteous actions, self-control and divine grace. By observing this vrat with a pure heart, devotees seek Lord Vishnu’s blessings for protection, inner strength, prosperity, peace and liberation from negative karmic tendencies.
