Putrada Ekadashi

Putrada Ekadashi

Putrada Ekadashi is a sacred Hindu fasting day dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is especially observed by married couples who pray for the blessing, health, happiness, and bright future of their children. The word “Putrada” means “the giver of children.” Devotees believe that observing this Ekadashi with sincerity, purity, and complete devotion can help remove obstacles related to childbirth and bring peace, prosperity, and divine protection to the family.

Putrada Ekadashi occurs twice a year—once during the month of Pausha and again during Shravana. On this auspicious day, devotees observe a fast, worship Lord Vishnu, recite the Putrada Ekadashi Vrat Katha, chant Vishnu mantras, and perform charitable acts. The fast is concluded on Dwadashi at the appropriate Parana time. Beyond the desire for children, this vrat is also observed for spiritual purification, freedom from past sins, family harmony, and progress on the path of devotion.

Putrada Ekadashi is one of the most significant Ekadashi observances in the Hindu calendar. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the protector and sustainer of the universe. This Ekadashi holds special importance for couples seeking the blessing of a child and for parents who pray for their children’s health, intelligence, good character, success, and longevity.

According to religious tradition, observing Putrada Ekadashi Vrat with faith helps purify the mind and soul while reducing the negative effects of past actions. Devotees begin their preparations from Dashami by consuming simple and sattvic food and avoiding grains, alcohol, non-vegetarian food, anger, dishonesty, and negative thoughts. On Ekadashi, they wake up early, bathe, wear clean clothes, and take a sincere pledge to observe the fast.

An idol or picture of Lord Vishnu is worshipped with yellow flowers, Tulsi leaves, sandalwood, incense, a ghee lamp, fruits, and sweets. Devotees may chant “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” or recite the Vishnu Sahasranama. Listening to the Putrada Ekadashi Vrat Katha and remembering Lord Vishnu throughout the day are considered highly auspicious. Depending on health and personal capacity, devotees may observe a Nirjala fast, consume only fruits and milk, or follow a simple satvik diet.

The fast is completed on Dwadashi by offering prayers, feeding a Brahmin or a needy person, giving donations, and performing Parana within the prescribed time. It is believed that this vrat strengthens faith, encourages self-discipline, promotes peace in married life, and attracts the blessings of Lord Vishnu. Parents may also observe it to seek divine guidance and protection for their children.

Advice from Har Ghar Pandit Ji: Perform Putrada Ekadashi worship with a pure heart and positive intentions. The vrat should never be observed by ignoring serious health conditions. Pregnant women, elderly people, and individuals taking medication may follow a simple satvik diet after consulting a doctor and an experienced priest. Sincere devotion, compassion, charity, and good conduct are the true foundations of this sacred observance.
