History of Shri Radha Vallabh Temple

The history of Shri Radha Vallabh Temple is closely connected with Hith Harivansh Mahaprabhu, a sixteenth-century saint who established the Radha Vallabh Sampradaya in Vrindavan.

Hith Harivansh Mahaprabhu was born in Baad village near Mathura and spent his early years in Devband, also known historically as Devavan. From childhood, he displayed profound devotion towards Srimati Radharani and Lord Krishna.

According to temple tradition, when Hith Harivansh Mahaprabhu decided to settle in Vrindavan, he received a divine instruction from Radharani during his journey. He met a Brahmin devotee named Atmadev, who possessed the sacred deity of Radha Vallabh Lal.

Atmadev gave the deity to Hith Harivansh Mahaprabhu, who brought Radha Vallabh Lal to Vrindavan and began the deity’s regular worship. In 1535, he established the Radha Vallabh tradition and installed the deity in Vrindavan.

After the time of Hith Harivansh Mahaprabhu, his son Vanachandra continued the spiritual tradition. Sundardas Bhatnagar, a disciple of Vanachandra, constructed the grand red-sandstone temple in 1585.

Sundardas Bhatnagar was associated with the court of Abdul Rahim Khan-i-Khanan during the reign of Emperor Akbar. He received royal permission to use red sandstone, which was generally reserved for forts, palaces and major imperial buildings.

The historic structure is presently known as Hith Mandir or the Old Radha Vallabh Temple. After damage during the seventeenth century, the regular worship of Radha Vallabh Lal continued in an adjoining temple complex.

Story of the Radha Vallabh Deity

According to the sacred tradition of the temple, the deity of Radha Vallabh Lal was not created by an ordinary sculptor.

A Brahmin named Atmadev performed intense worship of Lord Shiva. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Shiva presented him with the deity of Radha Vallabh Lal.

When Hith Harivansh Mahaprabhu was travelling towards Vrindavan, Srimati Radharani appeared to him in a divine vision and instructed him to meet Atmadev. Following this instruction, he reached Atmadev’s home.

Atmadev later entrusted the deity of Radha Vallabh Lal to Hith Harivansh Mahaprabhu. The deity was brought to Vrindavan and installed for worship, becoming the central divine form of the Radha Vallabh Sampradaya.

Meaning of Radha Vallabh

The name “Radha Vallabh” means “the beloved of Srimati Radharani.” It refers to Lord Krishna as the eternal companion and beloved of Radha.

The Radha Vallabh tradition gives the highest position to Srimati Radharani. She is worshipped as the supreme source of divine love, while Lord Krishna is lovingly addressed as Radha Vallabh because his identity is inseparable from her.

The tradition focuses on the intimate and selfless love between Radha and Krishna rather than on formal ritual alone. Devotion is expressed through music, poetry, personal service, beautiful decoration and loving remembrance of their divine pastimes.

Unique Presence of Radharani

The altar of Shri Radha Vallabh Temple is different from the altars of most Radha-Krishna temples. There is no separate human-shaped deity of Radharani standing beside Lord Krishna.

Instead, a sacred crown is placed beside the deity of Radha Vallabh Lal. This crown represents the divine presence of Srimati Radharani.

The symbolic representation expresses the belief that Radharani is eternally present with Radha Vallabh Lal even though she is not represented by a separate murti. Devotees offer their prayers to both Radha and Krishna through this unique arrangement.

Radha Vallabh Sampradaya

The Radha Vallabh Sampradaya was established by Hith Harivansh Mahaprabhu in 1535. The tradition places Srimati Radharani at the centre of devotion and considers divine love to be the highest spiritual path.

The principal devotional text of the tradition is the “Hith Chaurasi,” a collection of eighty-four devotional verses composed by Hith Harivansh Mahaprabhu in Braj Bhasha.

The principal features of the Radha Vallabh tradition include:

  • Supreme devotion to Srimati Radharani
  • Loving worship of Radha and Krishna
  • Seva performed with intimate devotion
  • Traditional Braj Bhasha poetry
  • Samaj Gayan or collective devotional singing
  • Beautiful dressing and ornamentation of Radha Vallabh Lal
  • Celebration of Radha-Krishna’s eternal pastimes
  • Emphasis on love instead of fear or rigid formality

Spiritual Significance of Shri Radha Vallabh Temple

Shri Radha Vallabh Temple is considered one of Vrindavan’s most important centres of Radha devotion. The temple teaches that pure, selfless love is the highest form of spiritual attainment.

Devotees visit the temple to seek:

  • The blessings of Srimati Radharani
  • Pure devotion towards Radha and Krishna
  • Peace and harmony in relationships
  • Freedom from pride and selfish attachment
  • Emotional strength and spiritual happiness
  • Divine love and compassion
  • Progress on the path of Bhakti
  • Protection from negative thoughts and difficulties

The temple’s devotional music, Braj poetry and intimate form of worship create an atmosphere that is peaceful yet emotionally powerful.

Architecture of Shri Radha Vallabh Temple

The old Radha Vallabh Temple, now known as Hith Mandir, is one of the notable red-sandstone temple structures of sixteenth-century Vrindavan.

Constructed in 1585, it reflects the strength and grandeur of early North Indian temple architecture. Its thick walls, high arches, stone openings and fortress-like exterior demonstrate the craftsmanship of the period.

The architectural highlights include:

  • Historic red-sandstone construction
  • Thick and strongly built walls
  • Tall arched entrances
  • Traditional stone carvings
  • Large devotional courtyard
  • Elevated temple structure
  • Separate spaces for kirtan and Samaj Gayan
  • Beautifully decorated present-day altar

The current worship area provides a more intimate darshan experience. The deity of Radha Vallabh Lal is decorated with colourful clothes, flowers, jewellery, crowns and seasonal ornaments.
