Visit Kanak Bhawan in Ayodhya, one of the city’s most beautiful and spiritually significant temples dedicated to Mata Sita and Lord Rama. Popularly known as the “Golden Palace of Sita-Ram,” the temple is famous for its magnificent palace-like architecture, beautifully adorned deities, spacious courtyards, devotional music, and peaceful atmosphere.

About Kanak Bhawan Ayodhya

Kanak Bhawan is a famous Hindu temple located in the Ramkot area of Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh. The temple is dedicated to Mata Sita and Lord Rama, who are worshipped together as the divine royal couple.

According to Hindu tradition, the original Kanak Bhawan was presented to Mata Sita by Queen Kaikeyi after her marriage to Lord Rama. It served as the private palace of Sita and Rama in Ayodhya. For this reason, the temple is also called Sita-Ram Mahal, Sone Ka Ghar, and the Golden Palace.

The existing temple structure was built in 1891 by Maharani Vrishbhanu Kunwari of Tikamgarh under the royal patronage of Maharaja Mahendra Pratap Singh. Its architecture reflects the palace-building traditions of Rajasthan and Bundelkhand.

Location of Kanak Bhawan

Kanak Bhawan is situated in the Ramkot area of Ayodhya, close to Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir, Dashrath Mahal, and Hanuman Garhi. Its central location makes it easy to include in an Ayodhya temple pilgrimage.

The temple can be reached on foot or by e-rickshaw from the major religious sites in Ayodhya. Vehicles may be restricted near the temple during festivals and periods of heavy crowding.

History of Kanak Bhawan

The history of Kanak Bhawan is connected with the Ramayana period. According to religious tradition, Queen Kaikeyi presented a magnificent golden palace to Mata Sita as a wedding gift after the marriage of Lord Rama and Mata Sita.

The palace became the personal residence of Sita and Rama. The name “Kanak Bhawan” comes from the Sanskrit word “Kanak,” meaning gold. Therefore, Kanak Bhawan means the Golden Palace.

The sacred structure underwent several reconstructions and renovations over the centuries. Traditional accounts associate its restoration with Lord Rama’s son Kush and later rulers of Ayodhya. King Vikramaditya is also believed to have renovated the shrine during his reign.

The current temple was constructed in 1891 by Maharani Vrishbhanu Kunwari, the Queen of Tikamgarh. She rebuilt the shrine as a grand temple-palace dedicated to Mata Sita and Lord Rama.

Who Built Kanak Bhawan?

The present structure of Kanak Bhawan was built in 1891 by Maharani Vrishbhanu Kunwari of Tikamgarh. The construction was undertaken under the royal patronage of her husband, Maharaja Mahendra Pratap Singh.

The queen was a devoted follower of Mata Sita and Lord Rama. She transformed the sacred site into a magnificent palace-style temple with spacious courtyards, decorated arches, beautiful chambers, and an impressive sanctum.

Mythological Story of Kanak Bhawan

According to the Ramayana tradition, Queen Kaikeyi loved Lord Rama deeply before the events that led to his exile. After the marriage of Lord Rama and Mata Sita, Kaikeyi presented a magnificent golden palace to the newly married couple.

The palace became the private residence of Sita and Rama. It was beautifully decorated with gold, precious stones, gardens, royal chambers, and artistic pillars. Because of its golden beauty, it became known as Kanak Bhawan.

Devotees believe that the spiritual presence of Sita and Rama continues to reside within the temple. Worshipping the divine couple here is considered especially beneficial for married life, family harmony, love, prosperity, and domestic happiness.

Religious Significance of Kanak Bhawan

Kanak Bhawan is one of the most important temples associated with the married life of Mata Sita and Lord Rama. While Shri Ram Janmabhoomi represents the birthplace of Lord Rama, Kanak Bhawan represents the divine household and royal residence of Sita-Ram.

Devotees visit the temple to pray for:

  • Happiness and harmony in married life
  • Blessings for newly married couples
  • Family unity and domestic peace
  • Prosperity and financial stability
  • Protection from family difficulties
  • Love, loyalty, and mutual understanding
  • Spiritual peace and devotion
  • Fulfilment of sincere wishes

Newly married couples frequently visit the temple to seek the blessings of Mata Sita and Lord Rama for a happy and stable married life.

Deities Inside Kanak Bhawan

The sanctum of Kanak Bhawan houses beautifully adorned idols of Mata Sita and Lord Rama. Three pairs of Sita-Ram deities can be seen inside the sanctum.

The deities are decorated with:

  • Golden crowns
  • Traditional royal garments
  • Beautiful jewellery
  • Flower garlands

  • Decorative backgrounds
  • Festival-specific attire

The charming appearance of the Sita-Ram idols is one of the main attractions of Kanak Bhawan. Lord Rama is generally depicted holding a bow and arrow, while Mata Sita stands beside him in a royal form.

Why Is It Called the Golden Palace?

The temple is called Kanak Bhawan because “Kanak” means gold. According to tradition, the original palace presented by Queen Kaikeyi was decorated with gold and precious materials.

The name also reflects the golden ornaments, crowns, jewellery, and royal decoration of the Sita-Ram deities. During aarti, sunlight and lamp light illuminate the sanctum, creating a beautiful golden appearance.

Architecture of Kanak Bhawan

Kanak Bhawan resembles a royal palace more than a conventional temple. Its architectural design reflects the traditional styles of Rajasthan and Bundelkhand.

  • Beautifully decorated arches
  • Ornamental gateways
  • Carved pillars and balconies
