Located near the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ellora Caves in Maharashtra, the temple is famous for its powerful spiritual significance, red-stone architecture, ancient legends and peaceful devotional atmosphere.

About Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga Temple

Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga Temple is located in Verul village near Ellora in the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district of Maharashtra. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is traditionally regarded as the twelfth Jyotirlinga mentioned in the Dwadash Jyotirlinga pilgrimage.

The temple is also known as Ghushmeshwar, Grushneshwar and Ghrishneshwar. Its name is connected with Ghushma, a devoted woman whose unwavering faith in Lord Shiva forms the central legend of the temple.

The sacred Shivling is installed inside the main sanctum. Devotees visit the temple to perform darshan, Abhishek, Rudrabhishek and other forms of Shiva worship.

When Was Grishneshwar Temple Built?

The sacred site has ancient origins and is associated with legends mentioned in the Shiva Purana. The earlier temple suffered damage and was reconstructed several times during different historical periods.

A significant restoration was undertaken by Maloji Raje Bhosale and members of the Bhosale family during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

The present temple structure was rebuilt during the eighteenth century under the patronage of Queen Ahilyabai Holkar.

Who Built Grishneshwar Temple?

The temple was first restored by Maloji Raje Bhosale of Verul, the grandfather of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. A stone inscription at the temple records the names associated with the Bhosale family’s contribution.

The present major structure was reconstructed by Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar during the eighteenth century. She was a respected ruler of the Holkar dynasty and restored numerous temples, ghats and pilgrimage centres across India.

History of Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga Temple

The original shrine existed before the present eighteenth-century structure. It experienced repeated damage during periods of political conflict in the Deccan.

Maloji Raje Bhosale restored the temple and developed the sacred water tank known as Shivalaya Tirtha. The Bhosale family continued supporting the shrine and its religious traditions.

Queen Ahilyabai Holkar later rebuilt the temple in its present form. Her reconstruction used locally available red and dark basalt stone and preserved the traditional architectural character of the sacred site.

Today, Grishneshwar Temple is protected for its religious and historic significance and continues to attract devotees from across India.

Legend of Ghushma and Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga

According to the Shiva Purana, a Brahmin named Sudharma lived with his wife Sudeha. The couple had no children, which caused them great sadness.

Sudeha arranged for Sudharma to marry her younger sister Ghushma. Ghushma was a devoted follower of Lord Shiva. Every day, she made 101 Shivlings from clay, worshipped them and immersed them in a nearby sacred lake.

Lord Shiva blessed Ghushma with a son. Over time, Sudeha became jealous of her sister’s happiness. In a moment of anger, she killed Ghushma’s son and placed his body in the lake where Ghushma immersed the clay Shivlings.

Ghushma continued her daily worship without losing faith in Lord Shiva. Pleased by her devotion, Lord Shiva appeared before her and restored her son to life.

Lord Shiva offered to punish Sudeha, but Ghushma requested him to forgive her. Impressed by Ghushma’s devotion and compassion, Lord Shiva agreed to remain at the location as Ghushmeshwar Jyotirlinga. The name later became Grishneshwar.

Significance of Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga

Grishneshwar is traditionally regarded as the final Jyotirlinga in the sacred list of twelve Jyotirlingas.

The temple’s legend teaches the importance of faith, patience, forgiveness and devotion. Ghushma’s refusal to abandon her worship, even during a moment of great suffering, represents complete trust in Lord Shiva.

Devotees pray at Grishneshwar for spiritual strength, family well-being, inner peace and protection. The temple is particularly important during Mondays, Pradosh, Maha Shivaratri and the month of Shravan.

Grishneshwar Temple Architecture

Grishneshwar Temple is constructed from red and dark basalt stone and combines elements of traditional Hemadpanthi, Maratha and medieval temple architecture.

The temple has a five-tiered shikhara decorated with sculptures of Hindu deities and mythological figures. Detailed carvings depicting different forms of Lord Vishnu, Shiva and other deities can be seen on the exterior walls.

Important architectural features include:

  • Five-tiered temple shikhara
  • Carved stone walls
  • Sabha Mandap
  • Twenty-four beautifully carved pillars
  • Nandi facing the sanctum
  • Inner Garbhagriha
  • Sacred Jyotirlinga
