Navratri Puja Vidhi is the traditional method of worshipping Maa Durga and her nine divine forms during the nine sacred days of Navratri. The worship begins with house purification, Kalash Sthapana, and the lighting of an Akhand Jyoti. Devotees worship a different form of Navdurga each day by offering flowers, fruits, sweets, incense, sacred water, and other auspicious items. Recitation of Durga Chalisa, Durga Saptashati, Devi Kavach, mantras, aarti, fasting, and meditation are also important parts of the worship. On Ashtami or Navami, Kanya Pujan is performed to honour the divine feminine energy. Following the Navratri Puja Vidhi with devotion is believed to remove negativity, strengthen spiritual energy, and bring peace, prosperity, courage, protection, and happiness into one’s life.
Navratri is a sacred nine-day Hindu festival dedicated to Maa Durga, the supreme embodiment of divine feminine power, also known as Shakti. During this auspicious period, devotees worship the nine forms of Goddess Durga—Shailputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri, and Siddhidatri. Each form represents a unique divine quality, such as strength, wisdom, courage, purity, compassion, protection, and spiritual accomplishment.
The Navratri Puja Vidhi generally begins on the first day with proper cleansing of the home and puja area. Devotees wear clean clothes, establish a sacred Kalash filled with water, place mango leaves and a coconut over it, and perform Ghatasthapana according to the auspicious time. Barley seeds may also be sown near the Kalash as a symbol of growth, prosperity, and positive energy. An Akhand Jyoti is lit before the image or idol of Maa Durga, and a sincere Sankalp is taken to observe the worship, fasting, and spiritual discipline throughout Navratri.
Every day, devotees invoke the respective form of Navdurga and offer roli, kumkum, akshat, flowers, fruits, sweets, incense, lamps, and bhog. Durga mantras, Durga Chalisa, Devi Kavach, Argala Stotra, Keelak Stotra, and selected chapters of Durga Saptashati may be recited according to one’s ability and family tradition. Morning and evening aarti, meditation, bhajan, japa, and prayers are performed to maintain a peaceful and devotional atmosphere in the home. Many devotees observe a complete or partial fast and consume only sattvic food, while avoiding alcohol, non-vegetarian food, onion, garlic, anger, harsh speech, and negative thoughts.
Kanya Pujan is commonly performed on Ashtami or Navami. Nine young girls, representing the nine forms of Goddess Durga, are respectfully welcomed, their feet are washed, and they are offered food, gifts, and blessings. A young boy may also be worshipped as Batuk Bhairav. After completing the worship, devotees perform Maa Durga’s aarti, offer prayers for forgiveness, and seek blessings for the well-being of their family.
Performing the Navratri Puja Vidhi with purity, discipline, and sincere devotion is believed to cleanse the mind and surroundings, remove obstacles and negative influences, and awaken inner strength. The worship brings the devotee closer to Maa Durga and inspires courage, self-control, compassion, faith, and spiritual awareness. More than elaborate rituals, Navratri emphasizes devotion, good conduct, and respect for the divine feminine energy present in all creation.
