Visit Lake Kalibari in Kolkata, a peaceful and spiritually significant temple dedicated to Maa Kali. Also known as Sree Sree 108 Karunamoyee Kalimata Mandir, the temple is located near Rabindra Sarobar and is one of the important Kali temples of South Kolkata.
Lake Kalibari is situated on Southern Avenue in Kolkata, West Bengal. The presiding deity of the temple is Maa Dakshina Kali, who is worshipped by devotees as Maa Karunamoyee.
The name Karunamoyee means “the compassionate and merciful mother.” Devotees believe that Maa Karunamoyee listens to sincere prayers and blesses her followers with peace, protection, courage, health, and prosperity.
The temple is managed by the Karunamoyee Kalimata Trust and remains an important centre of worship, Tantra Sadhana, meditation, and religious activities.
Lake Kalibari was established on 13 April 1949 by Sri Sri Haripada Chakraborty, a devoted worshipper of Maa Kali and a practitioner of Tantra Sadhana.
According to the temple tradition, Haripada Chakraborty received divine guidance from Maa Kali in a dream. The goddess instructed him to establish her idol and begin her worship at a sacred place.
Haripada Chakraborty initially expressed concern about his limited financial resources. Maa Kali assured him that she would take care of the expenses related to her worship. Following this divine instruction, he installed an earthen image of the goddess in a simple thatched hut known as a Patar Kutir.
Later, the temple was gradually developed and renovated with the support of devotees. The original shrine grew into the present temple complex, which is popularly known as Lake Kalibari because of its location near the lake at Rabindra Sarobar.
Maa Karunamoyee is worshipped as a compassionate form of Dakshina Kali. Devotees believe that she protects her followers from fear, negativity, illness, and difficult situations.
The temple is considered spiritually powerful because Maa Kali was established on a Panchamundi Asana according to traditional Tantric practices. Worship at the temple is performed with devotion, discipline, and traditional rituals.
