Parama Ekadashi

Parama Ekadashi

Parama Ekadashi is a highly sacred fasting day dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is observed during the Krishna Paksha of the Adhik Maas, also known as Purushottam Maas. Since Adhik Maas occurs approximately once every three years, Parama Ekadashi holds special religious and spiritual importance. Devotees believe that observing this vrat with devotion helps remove past sins, financial difficulties, negative tendencies, and obstacles in life.

On this day, devotees worship Lord Vishnu, observe a fast, chant Vishnu mantras, read or listen to the Parama Ekadashi Vrat Katha, and practise charity. Some devotees observe a complete fast, while others consume fruits, milk, and permitted fasting foods according to their health and capacity. The fast is traditionally concluded on Dwadashi after worshipping Lord Vishnu and offering food or donations to a deserving person.

Parama Ekadashi encourages devotees to practise self-control, truthfulness, compassion, devotion, and purity of thought. It is believed that sincere observance of this vrat brings Lord Vishnu’s blessings, peace, prosperity, spiritual progress, and freedom from difficulties.

Parama Ekadashi is one of the rare and spiritually powerful Ekadashis observed during Adhik Maas or Purushottam Maas. This additional lunar month is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, which makes every religious practice performed during this period especially significant. The word “Parama” means supreme or highest, indicating the exceptional spiritual importance of this Ekadashi.

According to Hindu tradition, the merit gained by observing Parama Ekadashi with sincere devotion is considered highly auspicious. Devotees wake up early, take a bath, clean the place of worship, and take a sankalp to observe the vrat faithfully. An idol or picture of Lord Vishnu is worshipped with yellow flowers, Tulsi leaves, incense, a lamp, fruits, sweets, and other sattvic offerings. The mantra “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” or “Om Namo Narayanaya” may be chanted throughout the day.

The Parama Ekadashi Vrat Katha is also heard or recited because it explains the importance and benefits of the fast. Devotees are advised to remain calm, avoid anger, dishonesty, criticism, and harmful thoughts, and dedicate their time to prayer, meditation, bhajans, and the remembrance of Lord Vishnu. Charity is considered particularly beneficial on this day. Food, clothes, grains, fruits, or financial assistance may be offered according to one’s ability.

The spiritual purpose of Parama Ekadashi is not limited to physical fasting. It teaches a devotee to control the senses, purify the mind, overcome unhealthy habits, and strengthen faith in God. When the vrat is observed with humility and righteous conduct, it is believed to reduce the burden of past karma, bring stability to life, and guide the devotee toward spiritual liberation.
