Devuthani Ekadashi
Devuthani Ekadashi, also known as Prabodhini Ekadashi or Dev Uthani Gyaras, is an important Hindu fasting day dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is observed on the Ekadashi Tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Kartik. According to Hindu tradition, Lord Vishnu awakens from his four-month divine sleep on this day, marking the conclusion of Chaturmas. Devuthani Ekadashi also signals the beginning of an auspicious period for marriages, housewarming ceremonies and other religious activities. Devotees observe a fast, worship Lord Vishnu and Maa Lakshmi, perform Tulsi Puja, recite sacred mantras and pray for happiness, prosperity, peace and spiritual progress.
Devuthani Ekadashi holds immense religious and spiritual importance in Hinduism. The word “Devuthani” means the awakening of the gods. It is believed that Lord Vishnu enters Yoga Nidra on Devshayani Ekadashi and awakens after four months on Devuthani Ekadashi. This period is known as Chaturmas, during which auspicious ceremonies such as marriages, engagements and housewarming rituals are generally avoided. With the divine awakening of Lord Vishnu, the auspicious season begins again.
On this sacred day, devotees wake up early, take a bath and make a vow to observe the Ekadashi fast with devotion and discipline. Lord Vishnu is worshipped with flowers, fruits, incense, lamps, Tulsi leaves and traditional offerings. Devotees chant Vishnu mantras, recite the Vishnu Sahasranama, listen to the Devuthani Ekadashi Vrat Katha and remain engaged in prayers and devotional activities. Some devotees observe a complete fast, while others consume fruits, milk and permitted fasting foods.
Tulsi Vivah is also closely associated with Devuthani Ekadashi. The ceremonial marriage of Maa Tulsi and Lord Shaligram is performed either on this day or on the following Dwadashi Tithi, depending on regional customs. This sacred ceremony symbolises purity, devotion and the beginning of the Hindu wedding season. Homes and temples are decorated with flowers, lamps and rangoli, creating a joyful and spiritually uplifting atmosphere.
Observing Devuthani Ekadashi with sincerity is believed to help remove past sins, purify the mind and strengthen one’s connection with Lord Vishnu.
