Holika Pujan Vidhi
Holika Pujan Vidhi is the sacred worship performed on the evening of Holika Dahan, one day before the festival of Holi. Devotees worship Holika, offer prayers to Lord Vishnu and remember the unwavering devotion of Prahlad. The ritual symbolizes the victory of faith, truth and goodness over ego, injustice and negativity. Traditional offerings such as roli, rice, flowers, raw cotton thread, turmeric, moong, wheat ears, coconut and sweets are offered before the Holika fire is lit.
Holika Pujan Vidhi holds great religious and cultural significance in Hindu tradition. Before Holika Dahan, devotees clean the worship area, take a bath and approach the prepared Holika with a calm and positive mind. A sacred resolution, or sankalp, is taken for the happiness, protection, prosperity and well-being of the family.
During the puja, water, roli, akshat, flowers, turmeric, gulal, moong, batasha, coconut and seasonal grains are offered to Holika. A raw cotton thread is traditionally wrapped around Holika while completing three, five or seven circumambulations. Devotees then pray to Lord Vishnu and remember Prahlad, whose devotion remained unshaken even in the face of danger.
After the puja, Holika is lit at the auspicious time. Families offer new wheat or barley ears to the sacred fire and pray for the removal of illness, conflict, fear and negative energy. The ritual reminds devotees to surrender anger, jealousy, pride and harmful habits in the symbolic fire and welcome Holi with forgiveness, harmony and renewed hope.
According to Har Ghar Pandit Ji, Holika Puja should be performed with purity, devotion and respect for local family traditions. The true purpose of the ritual is not merely completing customary steps, but purifying one’s thoughts and strengthening peace, unity and positivity within the home.
